An exercise program for back pain

What is it?

A 4 week supervised exercise program, designed to get people with chronic or recurrent back pain moving again.

The aims of the program include:

  • Increased strength and endurance
  • Increased mobility and flexibility
  • Improved coordination and muscle control
  • Decreased pain and disability
  • Enhanced function and reduced risk of re-injury during daily tasks
  • Create pathways for ongoing exercise

We will perform individualised pre and post testing to ensure we are achieving these goals.

Why should I do it?

Take control of your pain – learn how to move your spine comfortably, and build confidence in loading it through daily tasks such as bending and lifting.

Evidence shows that the single most effective treatment for the majority of back pain is exercise. Given that 80% of the adult population experiences back pain, learning how to exercise the back safely and effectively is an important strategy for minimising pain, disability, time off work etc.

Osteopathic treatment has traditionally been based around manual therapy – hands on manipulation on tables. Whilst this can be effective for reducing pain, and improving mobility, it can’t strengthen you.

This program is an opportunity to take the next step in treatment – actually addressing some of the core causative factors in back pain.

Who’s running it?

Osteopath Shaun Richardson, in the new movement space within Parkdale Osteo Clinic. In addition to his osteopathic qualifications, Shaun has completed a large amount of extra training in exercise rehabilitation.

This means he has an understanding of the entire injury process, from acute treatment right through to end stage return to function/performance.

How much is it?

To join the program, you need to be able to commit to 4 x 1hr sessions weekly.

These sessions are charged at $85 per session – the same as a standard osteo consult (but you get a full hour, rather than 30 minutes). Total commitment x 4 is an upfront payment of $340.

This is about the same amount as a lumbar MRI costs, except this program is going to provide immediate and long lasting benefits!

Where does it lead?

Exercise is an important part of good health. We all know it, but most of us don’t get enough of it. There are many reasons for this, and pain is often one of them. This program will assist with reducing your pain and getting you moving, often in conjunction with your usual osteopathic treatment.

Another common limitation is time – that’s why we will keep things simple, easy and practical for you to do at home whenever convenient.

Motivation is another factor – we have opportunities to connect you with people who can help keep you on track with regular scheduled exercise. At the end of the program we will discuss ways you can continue with exercise in the future.
